How To Enjoy An Authentic Mexican Christmas

By Annie Dubois

Ever culture has a different way of celebrating the Christmas season, and Mexico is no different. With the wonderful traditions, you will find an authentic Mexican Christmas is a thing of joy and wonder involving the whole family and lasting considerably longer than one or two days.

December 16th is the start of Posada. Posada celebrates and follows the journey of Joseph and Mary on their travels from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Two children after dark each night carry two small, pine cones that have been decorated to represent Joseph and Mary on the burro. There is a procession each night with the children knocking on a random door asking for lodgings for the family.

At this point, the residents threaten harm to the family if they do not move on, and obviously, this leaves the family pleading for a safe refuge. The house members will again threaten the traveling couple, but then the head of the house will realize who the couple is, and throwing open the doors, will greet and welcome the couple with open arms.

Everyone will kneel around the Nacimiento or the manager scene, and will sing glorious songs, Ave Marias, and of course, offer a prayer. Upon Christmas Eve, adding a new verse to the Ave Marias indicates that the birth is under way, and at midnight, fireworks announce the birth of Christ. There is a lot of wondrous celebration, and the whole family eats, drinks, and prays welcoming the Christ Child to the world.

Of course, if you are celebrating an authentic Mexican Christmas, you will want to have the best in costumes and foods. Delectable cuisine is a must at a celebration, and this is cuisine you will find absolutely delicious and wonderful. Filled with menudo, atole, rice, tamales, and other fine dishes, this is a holiday like no other.

Here are is a favorite from my own kitchen. What would you like to add?

Sweet Rice or Arroz Dulce

3/4 cup of rice

1/2 cup of sugar

1 teaspoon of Mexican vanilla or real vanilla

4 cups of whole milk

1 cup of cream

1/4 teaspoon of salt

Briefly scald the whole milk. Place the rice into one of those deep baking dishes, pour the scalded milk over the rice making sure to cover thoroughly, and bake in a 275 degree oven for roughly 3 hours. You can adjust as needed for time and temperature. The rice at this point should be soft. You will want to stir about every 10 minutes for the first house to help in preventing sticking. Also, you can add more scalded milk if needed.

Take out of the oven about 30 minutes before it is completed. Add the sugar, vanilla, cream, and stir thoroughly. Continue baking to completion.

Celebrating a Mexican Christmas or Posada would not be complete without adding this delicious sweet rice to the table. Children as well as adults love this rice dish with a sweet kick. Celebrating the holiday season has never been so easy or so absolutely scrumptious. In fact, this recipe also makes a wonderful dessert for special occasions all year long. Feliz Navidad!

The Onion: An interview with ‘America’s Finest News Source’

Sunday, November 25, 2007

Despite the hopes of many University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) students, The Onion was not named after their student center. “People always ask questions about where the name The Onion came from,” said President Sean Mills in an interview with David Shankbone, “and when I recently asked Tim Keck, who was one of the founders, he told me the name—I’ve never heard this story about ‘see you at the un-yun’—he said it was literally that his Uncle said he should call it The Onion when he saw him and Chris Johnson eating an onion sandwich. They had literally just cut up the onion and put it on bread.” According to Editorial Manager Chet Clem, their food budget was so low when they started the paper that they were down to white bread and onions.

Long before The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, Heck and Johnson envisioned a publication that would parody the news—and news reporting—when they were students at UW in 1988. Since its inception, The Onion has become a veritable news parody empire, with a print edition, a website that drew 5,000,000 unique visitors in the month of October, personal ads, a 24 hour news network, podcasts, and a recently launched world atlas called Our Dumb World. Al Gore and General Tommy Franks casually rattle off their favorite headlines (Gore’s was when The Onion reported he and Tipper were having the best sex of their lives after his 2000 Electoral College defeat). Many of their writers have gone on to wield great influence on Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert‘s news parody shows.

And we are sorry to break the news to all you amateur headline writers: your submissions do not even get read.

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Chet Clem and Sean Mills about the news empire that has become The Onion.

Somali pirates threaten to kill British hostages in days

Saturday, January 23, 2010

A middle-aged British couple who have been held hostage by Somali pirates for more than three months said on Friday, in a telephone interview with ITN, that their captors have threatened to kill one or both of them if a government ransom is not received “within four or five days.”

Paul and Rachel Chandler disappeared on October 23, 2009, while in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia while en route from the Seychelles to Tanzania. Their 38-foot yacht, the Lynn Rival, was later found abandoned. Days later, pirates confirmed they were in fact holding the couple hostage within Somalia’s borders.

A spokeswoman for the British Foreign Office told media in a statement on Friday that the government’s policy was to not “make or facilitate concessions to hostage-takers.” She added, the Office is, however, still closely “monitoring the situation” and “doing everything it can” to secure the couple’s safe release.

The Chandlers’ captors have demanded a ransom payment of US$7 million (£4.3 million), but the British government has refused to pay it, in line with their policy.

On Friday, the pirates granted the Chandlers separate telephone interviews with UK-based media outlet ITN. According to the interviews, the couple pleaded for help and alleged that they have been “physically attacked,” separated and “treated as a captive animal” in solitary confinement at the hands of their captors.

Rachel Chandler told ITN that “dying would actually be an easy way out” and how she wanted to see her husband “at least once before we die.”

The validity of these threats are not known. According to The Hindu, pirates often make empty threats of execution, but rarely harm the captives.

Piracy is especially rife in the waters near Somalia, a nation, due to an ongoing civil war, that has not had a functioning government in place since 1991. Islamic extremist groups, such as al-Shabaab, as well as various warlords and pirate gangs control most of the nation. The only exception is the besieged capital of Mogadishu, which is protected primarily by UN peace-keepers and other foreign troops.

According to the International Maritime Bureau, there were 406 reported pirate attacks worldwide in 2009, compared to approximately 290 the year before. During both years, more than 50% of these incidents occurred off the coast of the Horn of Africa.

Computer glitch delays online tax filing in Canada

Thursday, March 8, 2007

Computer systems used by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the handling of tax filing data for Canadians have been temporarily shutdown due to infrastructure problems.[1] A March 7 article in the Toronto Star[2] states that due to errors in the electronic filing system, Canada Revenue Agency will be unable to accept any tax filings electronically or corrections to prior filings.

A fact sheet from the CRA [3] states that “until the problem is resolved, we cannot process returns filed on paper, or returns filed electronically before the system interruption. Refunds will be delayed until processing is resumed”.

A check of the taxing authority’s website[4] regarding the issue states “We have temporarily shut down public access to electronic services to ensure the integrity of taxpayer information.” and that “We have now traced the source of the problem to software maintenance conducted on March 4, 2007. We are currently working to bring all systems back online gradually.”

A CRA press release dated March 6 [5] states “Commissioner of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Michel Dorais today instructed some computer applications related to personal income tax filing to be temporarily halted.” he also said, “there is no indication that this situation was caused by intrusion, hacking, or computer virus”. Further, “These applications include online services like Efile, Netfile, and My Account. Mr. Dorais said that he instructed that this preventative measure be taken following indications that CRA computer systems have run into infrastructure problems. In order to safeguard existing systems and to maintain the integrity of CRA’s taxpayer information holdings, Mr Dorais ordered tax filing processes halted.”

An article in The Globe and Mail [6] states that taxpayers “can wait for Netfile to return to service, or they can print their returns and mail them to the CRA”, which will be processed when the computer glitch is resolved.

The deadline for Canadians to submit tax returns is April 30. The CRA indicates it is too soon to speculate on whether the filing deadline will be extended. They expect to restore all services, including EFile and Netfile, well in advance of the filing deadline.[7]

The shutdown also affects third-party companies that prepare tax returns and electronically file the data using the EFile facility on behalf of clients. According to the CRA, millions of individual Canadians use the Netfile service each year.

The Agency will provide updates daily to the media until the situation is resolved.

Discover The Troublesome Symptoms Of Ovarian Cysts Bursting

Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts Bursting: Find Out The Various Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts Bursting

There are various indications that point to the possibility that there is a case that the cyst in the ovary may burst. Understanding the symptoms of the cysts bursting or ovarian cysts rupture is necessary because otherwise proper diagnosis is difficult. Thus it is important to be able to identify the symptoms, because it is often the starting point of the diagnosis. Yes the practitioner is best placed to identify the symptoms, but self-diagnosis may also help a person find out the initial warning signs that the ovarian cyst may rupture. Keeping an eye out for symptoms of possible ovarian cyst rupture can go a long way in getting cured quickly and avoiding complications. It is a good idea to get in the habit of self-diagnosis to ensure early detection and expedited recovery.

The Signs and Symptoms

Pain and discomfort are some of the chief symptoms of the cysts in the ovary bursting and they are ignored often as these symptoms are usually linked with normal menstruation. Unfortunately, many women just brush aside these symptoms as natural symptoms of menstruation and other related minor problems. However, besides these, there are other less apparent symptoms that the ovarian cyst may rupture. Moreover, if you have already been diagnosed with ovarian cysts, any symptom besides those normally associated with the cysts should be looked into without delay. Diligent monitoring is crucial as it helps to find out the cyst symptoms and link them up to the cases. Here are some of the ovarian cyst rupture symptoms that are commonly seen:

(1) Extremely irregular menstrual cycle: In women of childbearing age, a case of sudden ovarian cyst rupture may lead to periods that become extremely irregular. The periods themselves can vary from being very light to extremely heavy. This calls for immediate medical attention. Erratic periods may also give rise to a host of other problems such as mood swings, emotional disturbances, weight gain, acne and others. Therefore, such symptoms should be given their due importance as they might indicate that there is a complication which is perhaps deep-rooted.

(2) Bleeding: Non-menstrual bleeding should always be taken seriously. Such bleeding can take place if there is a case of ovarian cyst rupture. This is even more probable for somebody who has already been diagnosed with ovarian cysts. Hence, any abnormal bleeding, especially at times other than during menstruation, should be investigated without delay.

(3) Bladder pressure: The ovarian cyst that gets ruptured may create an unusual stress on the urinary bladder and cause the affected individual to urinate more frequently. To add insult to the injury, some women may also find that it is not so easy to get it out, even when the caal of nature to pass urine is strong. Watch out for discomfort and pain during urination as they might indicate a ruptured ovarian cyst.

(4) Pelvic pain: Ovarian cyst causes some degree of pain in the pelvis region. When a cyst ruptures, this pain gets more intense. Sudden pain needs to be examined because this pain may indicate that there is some other complication.

(5) Physical modifications: Keep an eye open for abnormal physical changes like tenderness in the breast, change in body structure and sudden unexplained weight gain. These may indicate a rupture in the ovarian cyst.

(6) Nausea and vomiting: In some women, symptoms that are usually experienced during pregnancy, such as heaviness in the abdomen, nausea and vomiting may result due to ovarian cyst bursting. A feeling of nausea may lead to vomiting, and these symptoms may continue despite using conventional medication. Fainting spells, lightheadedness and dizziness are some of the other possible symptoms of an ovarian cyst rupture.

Besides these usual symptoms of a rupture in the ovarian cyst, if there are any irregularities in the gynecological health, plus the health of the person, they need to be checked out diligently without negligence. This is all the more true if you already know that you have ovarian cysts. Only regular monitoring would help in early detection and starting the right treatment in a timely manner.

Trying to fight the condition

Being diagnosed with ovarian cysts is only half the story. One should now start a process of treatment. Sometimes, some medications, including those that are prescribed by conventional practitioners are not quite effective in treating ovarian cysts. The reason behind this is that such medication seeks to address just the symptoms of the condition or at best treat once there has already been a rupture. They fail to address the problem from its grass root level and thus, never reach the basic cause of the issue. This leaves the patient open to the threat of a recurrence of the cyst, subsequent to its cure. The best option is to use the holistic approach to address the problem at its core and thus, receive the benefits of a truly comprehensive treatment.

Holistic treatment

The holistic approach determines the proper line of action only after the symptoms of the cyst bursting are clearly understood and analyzed. The steps to be taken under this treatment vary from case to case, depending on how severe or intense the problem and the complication is. However since holistic treatments are multidimensional, it can positively benefit most patients because it seeks to heal the problem in a manner which is more efficient, more effective and more natural. In some rare cases where the condition is severe, surgery may be needed. But in most other cases, a holistic approach is all you will need to cure yourself completely and break free from the clutches of ovarian cysts.

Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

Massive ice deposits found on Mars

Friday, March 16, 2007

The European Space Agency‘s Mars Express spacecraft has discovered ice deposits in the south pole of Mars that are larger than the state of Texas.

Scientists say that there is enough water in the deposits to cover the entire planet with up to 36 feet of water if the ice was to melt. Some sections of the ice deposits are up to 2.3 – 2.5 miles deep. The ice is composed of carbon dioxide, a little bit of dust, and water (90 percent of the water is estimated to be frozen).

What has caught the attention of the scientists working on the Mars Express project is that this may help reveal whether or not there is any (microbial) life within the ice.

Another perplexing question that scientists are trying to solve is what happened to all the water that produced all the channels on the surface of Mars.

Jeffrey Plaut, who is from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California and who is also leading the study, noted that, “We have this continuing question facing us in studies of Mars, which is: where did all the water go? Even if you took the water in these two (polar) ice caps and added it all up, it’s still not nearly enough to do all of the work that we’ve seen that the water has done across the surface of Mars in its history.”

Currently, only 10 percent of the water is remaining and is located at the poles of Mars. It has been suggested that some of the remaining 90 percent of the water that disappeared could either be underground or could have simply left the atmosphere into space.

Air Conditioning That Works Ac Tips Help Arizona Residents Survive A Global Warming Environment

Air Conditioning That Works – AC Tips Help Arizona Residents Survive a Global Warming Environment

by

Scot Morgan

Air Conditioning Essentials: Environmental Study Declares Arizona the Fastest-Warming State in the U.S. The nation is heating up: Arizona more-so than the rest of the states. Even as you read this article, wirefires are ravaging both Arizona and Texas. In fact, the entire world is getting hotter. Accommodating the heat may be unavoidable, but learning how to live comfortably and safely in-spite of the changing environment can make the forced acceptance a mite easier.

Recent federal studies evidence the truth of the current chatter between local homeowners. Worldwide, the temperatures are climbing, breaking records, stressing air conditioning equipment and just generally making life a little less joyful. Even the ice caps are responding to the change. Imagine how residents of Arizona feel.

Climate experts are worried and talking. Regional homeowners respond likewise. In a recent NASA analysis of US global surface temperatures, figures indicate that the past twelve years have include nine of the ten hottest seasons on record.

New studies from Climate Central declare Arizona a leader in the suffering. Local home and business cooling systems churn day-in and day-out an endless struggle to batter down the consequences of continually rising temperature extremes. Toasted Nights, Extreme Cooling Budgets and Learning to Adapt Arizona air conditioning experts in Phoenix, Scottsdale and other prominent locations agree that residents throughout the state are right to be concerned. And it\’s not just about individual stances concerning the political wars on global warming. Debating the cause and effect of rising temperatures don\’t change to immediate situation.

That\’s a more elementary problem. The heat is here, extreme weather is on the rise, and for the time being humans must adapt. Here are the questions being asked by Arizona residents:

Will temperatures in the southwestern U.S. continue to rise? Is the land in and around Arizona going to get drier by the year? How can residents reduce the health effects? What measures are necessary to counteract the rising cost of electricity, natural gas and home cooling expenses?

Get prepared. Here are some tips from Phoenix area HVAC experts:

A/C System Maintenance

Prolong the life of your home or business air conditioning system. Schedule an annual service and maintenance checkup. It will help you avoid the need for panic decisions during A/C failures. Along with crucial system services, a scheduled equipment maintenance plan will also help prevent electrical problems, gas leaks and fire dangers.

Scheduled A/C maintenance can:

Alert you in advance when an upgrade or system replacement is imminent to your future air conditioning needs Extend the life of old and new equipment Reduce your monthly operating costs Help preserve energy resources Provide more efficient cooling and comfort margins.

Upgrade To energy-Efficient Components

Sometimes your A/C only needs minor service. Sometimes it needs major service. If major service is in order, consider upgrading the central unit\’s air handler or evaporator coil components. The right upgrade can reduce energy consumption, provide better home comfort and reduce future service bills.

Purchase a New, High-Efficiency Central Air Conditioning System

If your home A/C is over ten years old, perhaps you should evaluate the values of buying a new energy-efficient cooling system. Modern A/C technology is designed to produce better home cooling at an extreme savings in energy consumption. Ask your local contractor for a free estimate. Make certain they visit on-site. Accurate A/C selection depends upon the structure of the home, the floor layout, square footage and many other exact factors.

Consider Installing a Heat Pump

For year-round home comfort, an energy-efficient heat pump may provide your best long-term solution. In cold weather, heat pumps generate home heating by applying reverse heat transfer processes. In the hot, sticky Arizona summers, heat pumps provide dependable refrigeration-system home cooling.

Take Advantage of Current U.S., Arizona and Local Power Company A/C Purchase Incentives

When buying a new, energy-efficient home cooling system, tax credits sweeten the already reduced market prices. Company incentives can be coupled with special bonuses from the local power company. Ask your local A/C service center for advise. Arizona Air Conditioning Service Center For AC Repair And AC Installation

Russian territory expands by 4.5 square kilometres after seismic activity

Saturday, November 14, 2009

According to scientists, the land territory of Russia has expanded by about 4.5 square kilometres within the last few years in the Far East due to seismic and volcanic activity.

The gained land was recorded in the Sakhalin Peninsula. Boris Levin, head of the Institute for Sea Geology and Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that the increase happened primarily due to two seismic events.

The first, in August of 2007, was when a heavy 6.8 earthquake near the city of Nevelsk in the Far East raised about three square kilometres of seabed above the level of the water. The second was in June of this year, when the Sarychev Peak volcano on the Matua Island erupted. GPS trackers on the Matua island were used to monitor the eruption, and the volcano changed its shape, adding 1.5 square kilometres of land, scientists said.

Geologists also reported that the Kuril Islands nearby were slowly moving towards mainland Russia at an estimated rate of eighteen milimetres per year.
