Wikinews interviews former Salt Lake City mayor and 2012 presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Former Salt Lake City mayor and human rights activist Rocky Anderson took some time to discuss his 2012 U.S. presidential campaign and the newly-created Justice Party with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Anderson served as mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years (2000–2008) as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he enacted proposals to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, reformed its criminal justice system, and positioned it as a leading sanctuary for refugees. After leaving office, Anderson grew critical of the Democratic Party’s failure to push for impeachment against President George W. Bush, and for not reversing policies on torture, taxes, and defense spending. He left the party earlier this year and announced that he would form a Third party.

Anderson officially established the Justice Party last week during a press conference in Washington D.C.. He proclaimed “We the people are powerful enough to end the perverse government-to-the-highest-bidder system sustained by the two dominant parties…We are here today for the sake of justice — social justice, environmental justice and economic justice.” The party promotes campaign finance reform and is attempting to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is currently working on ballot access efforts, and will hold a Founding Convention in February 2012 in Salt Lake City.

Among other issues, Anderson discussed climate change, health care, education, and civil liberties. He detailed his successes as mayor of Salt Lake City, stressed the importance of executive experience, and expressed his views on President Barack Obama and some of the Republican Party presidential candidates. He spoke in depth about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, with whom he worked during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and fellow Utahan, former governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr..

Telephone System For Small Business Users Multi Line Vo Ip Phone System

By Joe Arthur

For small business enterprises and entrepreneurial start-ups, having a telephone system for small business users that operates easily and smoothly, delivering high quality voice messages or phone connections at the best time is a definite competitive advantage. Besides that, any telephone systems for small business enterprises should also be easy to set-up and run reliably. All this means that the small business enterprise will access an excellent communications system without any headaches and overhead costs tied to running it, giving the owners and staff time to concentrate on running their business and growing it. That is the essence of a small business telephone system that gives a small business or start-up an operational competitive advantage in today’s fast-paced marketplace.

VoIP Phone System or Voice Over Internet Phone System

One option for small business telephone system are VoIP phone systems. VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol (IP), which is a system of telephone communications routed over the Internet. It is less expensive compared to a regular phone line. In some areas, you can make unlimited long distance calls for a very low price. Even international calls are cheaper compared to regular telephone rates. The best thing about this is that some provides interfaces that allow you makes call directly from the computer, making it easy to make calls while working.

Once upon a time, access to functions like having an auto-attendant, phone queuing, call forwarding or international dialing, were expensive and even difficult to set up. Not so anymore. Today, a hosted virtual VoIP PBX telephone system for small business enterprises contain all the latest phone system features at very affordable prices. More than just a productivity enhancing communications system, it also projects a quality company image to all callers.

Multi-Line VoIP Phone System

A second consideration would be to get a multi-line phone system. Note that the multi lines can regular or VoIP phone lines, so it is an added facet to a single line VoIP system. While a small business can thrive even with just one existing phone line, if you want your clientele to be able to reach you easily, you will need to look for small business telephone systems, preferably those that allow multiple incoming and outgoing calls at the same time. You may also need a fax line, or plan to have a separate line that doubles as a fax line. In that case, the multi-line phone system should be able accommodate that easily.

A multi-line cordless phone system can be very useful for small businesses as the user is not tied to the immediate desk area. The best thing about a small business telephone system with cordless phones is that it flexibly allows multiple users can make outgoing calls at the same time. This makes it ideal to use for sales and prospecting.

When reviewing telephone systems for small business enterprises, you have to first determine what your needs are, how many phones you need for your office, and an estimate of how many calls you are likely to make simultaneously. Your phone system should be designed to fit the nature and the demands of your business, whether it is a regular single or multi line VoIP phone system.

France: Villepin’s cabinet announced

Thursday, June 2, 2005

Newly named Prime Minister of France Dominique de Villepin has had his cabinet accepted by President of the Republic Jacques Chirac.

Head of the majority Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) party, Nicolas Sarkozy, comes as a second-in-command as Minister of the Interior, with the honorific rank of Minister of State. The Ministry of the Interior is traditionally one of the most important positions in the cabinet, with that of Finances; the Minister of the Interior is in charge, notably, of law enforcement and relationships with local governments. There is some uneasiness in having the head of a party in a position that is partly in charge of electoral redistrictings. Also, this arrangement creates a peculiar situation: it is public knowledge that Villepin and Sarkozy consider each other a dangerous political rival with respect to the 2007 presidential election, and they are widely said to loathe each other.

The cabinet was presented as a “restricted” cabinet. However, as many as 31 ministers, delegate ministers and secretaries of state were named; still, this is a reduction from the preceding 43. While the cabinet is for a large part copied from the preceding one, some ministers who had provoked controversy and animosity were removed or moved to another less risky position. François Fillon, formerly Minister of National Education, whose plan for reforming public education was lambasted by members of his own party, including president of the National Assembly Jean-Louis Debré, was ruled partly unconstitutional by the Constitutional Council, and provoked widespread student protests and unrest in high schools, is no longer a minister. Dominique Perben, who pushed for controversial law which opponents allege curtail fundamental constitutional freedoms while Minister of Justice, was moved to the less sensitive position of Minister of Transportation and Equipment. It is also possible that the movement of Brigitte Girardin from Minister for the Oversea (relationships with French overseas departments and territories) to (international) Cooperation was motivated by the crisis that occurred in French Polynesia between Gaston Flosse and his opponent Oscar Temaru.

While the Union for French Democracy (UDF) party, led by François Bayrou, formally remains in the ruling coalition along with the UMP, it has decided that, because the new government would probably do more of the same policies, it would not participate in it. The only member of the government from UDF is Gilles de Robien, as in the preceding government.

Previous head of government Jean-Pierre Raffarin had lost the confidence of the French, with polls putting him as low as 22% confidence. President Chirac’s confidence among the citizenry is also a record low of 24%.

Mr Dominique de Villepin is Prime Minister.

 1. Mr Nicolas Sarkozy — Minister of State, Minister of the Interior and of the management of the Territory (law enforcement, French National Police, French Gendarmerie; relationships with local governments; safety regulations; territory subdivisions)
 2. Mrs Michèle Alliot-Mariew:Minister of Defense (France)
 3. Mr Philippe Douste-Blazy, Minister of Foreign Affairs
 4. M. Jean-Louis Borloo, Minister of employment, social cohesion and housing

 6. M. Gilles de Robien, Minister of National Education, of Higher Education and Research;
 7. M. Pascal Clément, Keeper of the Seals, Minister of Justice;
 8. M. Dominique Perben, Minister of Transportation, Equipment, Tourism and the Sea (national roads, help to local governments for transportation, some government constructions)
 9. M. Xavier Bertrand, Minister of Health and Solidarities;
 10. M. Dominique Bussereau, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries;
 11. M. Christian Jacob, Minister of the Civil Service|;
 12. M. Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, Minister of Culture and Communications; (museums, cultural activities, supervision of broadcasting)
 13. Mrs Nelly Olin, Minister of Ecology and sustainable development;
 14. M. François Baroin, Minister for the Oversea;
 15. M. Renaud Dutreil, Minister for small and middle businesses, Commerce, artisans, and self-employed professionals
 16. M. Jean-François Lamour, Minister of Youth, Sports and associative life.

Delegate ministers operate as subordinates of ministers.

 1. Mr Henri Cuq, delegate minister for relationships with Parliament;
 2. Mr Azouz Begag, delegate minister for the promotion of the equality of chances;
 3. Mr Jean-François Copé, delegate minister for budget and the reform of the State, spokesman of the Government;
 4. M. Gérard Larcher, delegate minister for employment, work, and the professional insertion of the young;
 5. Mrs Catherine Vautrin, delegate minister for social cohesion and parity [of the sexes];
 6. Mrs Brigitte Girardin, delegate minister for [international] cooperation, development and francophonie;

HIV-positive man receives 35 years for spitting on Dallas police officer

Sunday, May 18, 2008

An HIV-positive man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday, one day after being convicted of harassment of a public servant for spitting into the eye and open mouth of a Dallas, Texas police officer in May 2006. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that no one has ever contracted HIV from saliva, and a gay-rights and AIDS advocacy group called the sentence excessive.

A Dallas County jury concluded that Willie Campbell’s act of spitting on policeman Dan Waller in 2006 constituted the use of his saliva as a deadly weapon. The incident occurred while Campbell, 42, was resisting arrest while being taken into custody for public intoxication.

“He turns and spits. He hits me in the eye and mouth. Then he told me he has AIDS. I immediately began looking for something to flush my eyes with,” said Waller to The Dallas Morning News.

Officer Waller responded after a bystander reported seeing an unconscious male lying outside a building. Dallas County prosecutors stated that Campbell attempted to fight paramedics and kicked the police officer who arrested him for public intoxication.

It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears.

Prosecutors said that Campbell yelled that he was innocent during the trial, and claimed a police officer was lying. Campbell’s lawyer Russell Heinrichs said that because he had a history of convictions including similarly attacking two other police officers, biting inmates, and other offenses, he was indicted under a habitual offender statute. The statute increased his minimum sentence to 25 years in prison. Because the jury ruled that Campbell’s saliva was used as a deadly weapon, he will not be eligible for parole until completing at least half his sentence.

If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.

The organization Lambda Legal (Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund), which advocates for individuals living with HIV, says that saliva should not be considered a deadly weapon. Bebe Anderson, the HIV projects director at Lambda Legal, spoke with The Dallas Morning News about the sentence. “It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears,” said Anderson.

The Dallas County prosecutor who handled the trial, Jenni Morse, said that the deadly weapon finding was justified. “No matter how minuscule, there is some risk. That means there is the possibility of causing serious bodily injury or death,” said Morse. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins stated: “If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.”

Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.

A page at the CDC’s website, HIV and Its Transmission, states: “HIV has been found in saliva and tears in very low quantities from some AIDS patients.” The subsection “Saliva, Tears, and Sweat” concludes that: “Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.” On Friday the Dallas County Health Department released a statement explaining that HIV is most commonly spread through sexual contact, sharing needles, or transfusion from an infected blood product.

Cosmetic Surgeon: How To Choose The Right Surgeon For Your Procedure

Submitted by: Abigail Aaronson

Choosing a cosmetic surgery procedure may be an easy decision, but picking a cosmetic surgeon can be much more difficult. You’ll have to consider skill level, bedside manner, location, and even availability. Here are some of the most important considerations to take into account when choosing the perfect cosmetic surgeon.

1. Check Credentials

A plastic surgeon should always be board-certified, have many years of experience, specialize or have significant experience with the specific procedure you’re considering, and have gone to an accredited medical school. It’s also wise to check the cosmetic surgeon’s past history. Check for malpractice suits by doing an extensive search on the internet. Some states also release certain records to the public. See if these area available where you live.

2. Consult with Several Surgeons

When making a big decision, it is important to explore a variety of options. After narrowing down your initial research to a handful of qualified surgeons, choose three to four for an initial consultation. Many times these consultations are free or the cost will be deducted if you choose to undergo the procedure with that particular surgeon. Meeting with different cosmetic surgeons will help you compare prices, techniques, and bedside manner.

3. Experience

Many surgeons perform multiple procedures, but often times they specialize in a particular technique or with a specific area of the body. This does not mean that you necessarily need to choose the top cosmetic surgeon in his field, but many patients feel more comfortable choosing a surgeon that has a more limited scope of practice.

Some surgeries are more straightforward to perform than others. The average breast augmentation is generally a fairly routine cosmetic surgery while nose jobs tend to be less predictable and more individualized. Generally, the more complex of difficult the surgery, the wiser it is to choose a specialist.

4. Bedside Manner

Although credentials and skill trump the most pleasant of plastic surgeons, bedside manner is still an important factor to take into consideration. You should feel a certain level of comfort and confidence in surgeon and the care you will be receiving.

Does the surgeon answer your questions completely and honestly? Is he available if complications arise? How accessible is his office and staff? Does he take his time and not rush you during the consultation? These are all important questions to ask when making a decision.

5. Location

Unless you’re particularly lucky or live in a large city, you might have to make some travel accommodations for your cosmetic surgery. Some people don’t mind traveling great distances for specialist or top doctors, while others simply can’t afford the expense.

You’ll also have to consider spending a few days at a local hotel immediately following the surgery before you’re fit enough to travel back home, as well as the possibility of having hiring a nurse to assist you or a trusted friend who can accompany you.

If travel expenses are simply out of your budget, be sure that more local options are just as desirable, or consult with your surgeon’s office to see if they can be of assistance in finding you a more affordable deal.

Che Guevara’s ”Motorcycle Diaries” companion dies

Wednesday, March 9, 2011

Alberto Granado Jiménez, the Argentinian biochemist who was Che Guevara’s companion on his transformative motorcycle trip through South America, died in Havana on Saturday, reported Cuban state television. He was 88 and died of natural causes.

The politically active Jiménez met Ernesto “Che” Guevara, then a medical student, in Hernando, Argentina where Guevara had gone to play rugby. Both were intellectually curious and interested in exploration. In 1951 they set out on an eight-month motorcycle trip through South American that exposed them to the poverty in which most South Americans lived. The pair worked in a leprosy colony and met wtih destitute miners and indigenous people. Both men kept diaries which served as the basis for the 2004 film, The Motorcycle Diaries, produced by Robert Redford and directed by Walter Salles.

According to the Guardian, “Their road trip awoke in Guevara a social consciousness and political convictions that would turn him into one of the iconic revolutionaries of the 20th century.” The trip is widely believed to have inspired Guevara to go to Cuba and join Fidel Castro in his 1959 revolt against Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista.

By the time the two men met again eight years later, Guevara was a revolutionary hero and chief of Cuba’s central bank. Jiménez, who had remained in Argentina working in a clinic, accepted Guevara’s invitation to move to Cuba in 1961 and founded a medical facility in Santiago. Later he moved to Havana where he continued his medical work. The two remained friends although they did not always agree. Jiménez rejected Guevara’s belief that social reform in Latin America had to be accomplished through guerrilla warfare.

The book The Motorcycle Diaries was published in the 1990’s. Jiménez said of the book that it inspired the image of the young Che as a romantic figure.

Jiménez authored the book Traveling with Che Guevara: The Making of a Revolutionary, published in 2003.

Wikinews interviews Australian Paralympic assistant coach David Gould

Thursday, July 25, 2013

Wikinews caught up with Australian wheelchair basketball coach David Gould in Canberra, where the Australia women’s national wheelchair basketball team — the Gliders — were having a training camp.

Gould told Wikinews he retired from playing after the 2002 World Championships. He said he began coaching able bodied basketball at schools and clubs in South Australia. He was awarded a scholarship by Basketball Australia and the Australian Sports Commission, and became assistant coach of the Under 23 Men’s team in November 2011. He is now national wheelchair skills coach, assistant coach of the men’s and women’s national teams, and coach of the Under 23 Men’s and Under 25 Women’s teams.

He noted the Gliders have another training camp coming up in Brisbane in August. This is to be an open development camp any player can attend. Twelve players are to be selected for the Asia Oceania Zone (AOZ) Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Bangkok in November. The top three teams then qualify for the World Championships, to be held in Canada next year.

He is acutely aware the Gliders have never won a World Championship or a Paralympics. But he has won a gold medal, with the men’s team, the Rollers, in Atlanta in 1996. “We went on a tour of the United States beforehand”, he recalled. Facing the United States in the United States was daunting. There was a huge crowd. So how did they do it? “We had confidence in ourselves, and stuck to our plan,” he recalled.

This, he said, is what he and Glider’s head coach Tom Kyle are trying to teach the Gliders. To believe in the process. They take them out of their comfort zone, show them the right techniques, the right way to do things. The idea is to get the principles right.

Gould told Wikinews they have to look not just to the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio in 2016, but further ahead to 2020. They have to recruit new players and develop them. He said he took a Gliders team to the Osaka Cup with only four members of the 2012 team, in order to give members of the development team experience with international competition. He set up a mentor system whereby the six newcomers were each paired with one of the old hands.

Wikinews was shown how the games are videoed and critiqued by the coaches. Special software allows the videos to be edited. Effects such as circling players can be added, along with captions and audio from the coaches. The edited video can then be downloaded by the players. Gould said there is a weekly video conference with the players.

He considered video of other teams is an important training tool. He noted the Gliders had to play Brazil in the first match of the Paralympics in London, which was very tough, because so little was known about them. As it turned out, Brazil has a great program, and he thinks it could be a contender in front of a home crowd in Rio in 2016.

Wikinews noted one of the Gliders, Amber Merritt, had her arm in a sling. Gould said her arm had been scanned, and the doctors will make their evaluation. Like most elite athletes, he knows about injury first hand. He told Wikinews he had injured his shoulder during the 2000 Olympics, and had to have it operated on afterwards. He said he did not want players playing injured, and sometimes it was better just to lose a week if you have the flu. He expected his players to be honest and up front with themselves, their coaches and their team. “We need everyone on the same page”, he told Wikinews.

Gould told Wikinews the Asia Oceania Zone championships will feature Australia, Japan, China, Thailand, South Korea, and perhaps Hong Kong. The venue in Bangkok is well known to him, as the U23 Men’s team have already played there. His plan is to arrive early, to allow the players to acclimatise to the high humidity and the food. Some of the U23 men got sick. He does not expect difficulty qualifying, but it is “one of the I’s that have to be dotted and T’s that have to be crossed.”

He said Australians intend to apply full pressure, but one of their objectives is also to help the competition. One of the problems in Australia is that it takes a long time to go anywhere, he told Wikinews. By building up the teams in the Asia Oceania Zone, he hopes Australian teams will not have to travel so much or so far to meet first class competition.
