Marussia F1 test driver Maria de Villota seriously injured in testing accident

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

The Marussia F1 team’s test driver, Spaniard María de Villota, was taken to hospital by air ambulance today after a collision in testing at Duxford Aerodrome.

At the end of her first installation run, the car she was driving had a low-speed collision with the loading ramp of the team’s support truck. According to BBC Cambridgeshire presenter Chris Mann, the car “suddenly accelerated” into the rear of the vehicle. The Marussia team released a statement an hour and a half after the accident, stating that she had been transferred to hospital, and a further statement would be issued once her condition had been assessed.

A spokesman for the East of England ambulance service, Gary Sanderson, said de Villota had “[…] sustained life-threatening injuries and following treatment at the scene by paramedics, she has been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further care.” According to witnesses, she was motionless for about fifteen minutes as medical teams attended to her, but did move her hands before being taken away from the test track. Medical charity Magpas, whose volunteer paramedics attended the accident, reported she had sustained injuries to her head and face, and was in a ‘stable condition’ when she reached the hospital.

Marussia reported her as conscious later in the afternoon: “Since Maria’s arrival at the hospital at approximately 10.45am this morning, she has been receiving the best medical attention possible at the hospital, which is the region’s major trauma centre. Maria is conscious and medical assessments are ongoing. The team will await the outcome of these assessments before providing further comment. The team’s first priority at this time is Maria and her family.”

De Villota was announced as Marussia’s test driver in March, having prior experience driving for Alan Docking Racing in Superleague Formula in Spain.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/AL-KY

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Fighting in Dili continues ahead of multinational deployment

Thursday, May 25, 2006

Wikinews Australia has in-depth coverage of this issue: 2006 East Timor crisis

Ahead of the deployment of 1000-1300 Australian troops in the next couple of days, fighting between renegade East Timorese military forces and government security forces has continued in East Timor’s capital, Dili, from which at least 21,000 people have fled. The 600 renegade military personnel were fired from East Timor’s 1400 strong army after striking over poor pay and conditions, including ethnic discrimination. Based in the Aileu mountains, the rebel force is making small attacks around the southern, eastern and western sides of Dili, but reports of gunfire in the city centre are developing.

Australian-trained Major Alfredo Reinado, who leads the renegade force, has said that he aims to “guarantee justice and the creation of a professional defence force,” not topple the East Timorese government.

Lieutenant General Peter Leahy, the Vice Chief of the Australian Defence Force, is to touch down in Dili today to discuss Australian troops’ deployment in Dili and their Rules of Engagement (ROE) with the East Timorese Prime Minister, Mari Alkatiri, and other government officials. However, gunfire and the burning of houses has been reported on a main road to Dili international airport, cutting it off from the city. In response, Australian Prime Minister John Howard announced the deployment of 150 soldiers from 4 RAR (Commandos) with Blackhawk helicopters and C-130 transport planes in order to take the airport and secure its perimeter to allow for flights to continue.

The multinational deployment has been met with appreciation amongst both the rebel and government forces. Foreign minister Jose Ramos-Horta has said that that the arrival of troops and police from Australia, New Zealand, Portugal and possibly Malaysia (which has indicated it may send up to 500 police and troops), is still necessary for security. News of the arriving Australian-led peacekeeping force, was welcomed by Dilinese refugees Mr Ramos-Horta said; “Their mere presence in Dili, the capital city, will have a psychological calming effect.” The leader of the rebel forces, Major Reinado has also welcomed the deployment, saying that he hoped the peacekeepers would be able to create a peace. MAJ Reinado has said “This is the only solution, …There is no other way, or it will be war forever. The Government has taken too long. It is not capable of resolving this.” and even told Portuguese news agency Lusa that he would personally shake the hands of the arriving multinational force. The United Nations Security Council, having appealed for an end to fighting, welcomed the deployment of military forces to East Timor.

Australia also led the successful International Force East Timor (INTERFET) and United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) forces from 1999 to 2002.

Varieties And Benefits Of Unique Restroom Signs

By Eliz Guide

If you have traveled, you have no doubt run into some rather unique restroom signs. From the one on the door directing you to the restroom, to others that you may encounter once you are inside, you have surely seen many variations along the way.

You may see the men’s rooms with labels such as Guys, His, Men, Boys and an assortment of other types of placards. Unique restroom signs for women’s facilities are Gals, Hers, Ladies and Girls.

Sometimes bathrooms are equipped with ADA signage which shows only the universal pictogram for male or female. This is a very good way to make sure that everyone, even those who may not speak the language of the country they are in, can find the appropriate facility. It is also very helpful for those who are handicapped because they are also equipped with the brail definition of male and female respectively.

Other unique restroom signs are those that designate a family bathroom. These areas are usually reserved for families who need to assist a family member or child, and they are usually unisex so that there is no restriction on a daughter assisting a father or a mother assisting a son.

Inside a washroom you may see other unique restroom signs directing you to the handicapped stall, directions for use of hand dryers and reminders to employees to wash their hands before returning to work. Other types that you may encounter in a bathroom would be those asking you to report an unsanitary environment to management or contact information in case of an emergency.

You may also see some that offer advertisements of local eateries or hotels. Some businesses are trying to do their part to erase their carbon footprint by posting notices asking that you please switch off the lights upon exiting the restroom.

You may also see unique restrooms signs if there are problems such as a wet floor or a difficulty such as a commode that doesn’t flush correctly. You may also see some in a facility directing you to a baby changing station complete with instructions on how to use the station, and proper disposal of any products that you may need to throw away.

Some washrooms are equipped with information directing you of who to contact if you need assistance. This is important for elderly or wheelchair bound patrons who may be in need of a little help but are by themselves.

Some facilities are equipped with a placard that gives the local emergency numbers to fire, police, sheriff and highway patrol, as well as emergency care numbers for emergency squads and hospitals. These are extremely helpful to the traveler who would not immediately know these numbers, or even what county of the state they are in.

Some bathrooms have community bulletin boards where people can place their own advertisements for various products and services in the area. While others go the distance by placing information about hotlines such as child abuse phone numbers, battered spouse hotlines and teenage runaway hotlines.

Technical troubles hold up International Space Station repairs

Monday, August 9, 2010

A faulty ammonia line fitting delayed repairs to a cooling pump on the International Space Station Saturday during an eight-hour spacewalk.

During the spacewalk, astronauts Doug Wheelock and Tracy Caldwell Dyson were to repair a faulty cooling system, which failed on July 31. The faulty cooling unit was to be swapped with a new one that was previously in storage to solve the problem; however, an ammonia leak in the final line to be disconnected from the unit halted attempts for a repair.

Upon discovering the problem, the astronauts were instructed to reconnect the line and install a positioning device to maintain the proper pressure on the line.

Upon completing the spacewalk, Wheelock and Dyson spent additional time in the airlock to get rid of any ammonia particles that may have attached themselves to their spacesuits.

NASA officials are analyzing possible solutions to the issue to attempt during a planned spacewalk Wednesday. Wednesday’s spacewalk was previously intended to be second in the series to repair the cooling system by reattaching fluid and electrical lines.

Before Saturday’s spacewalk, NASA officials projected that up to three spacewalks may be needed to repair the cooling system.

Most of the space station’s non-critical scientific components have been temporarily shut-down in order to reduce heat generation with only one cooling loop available to the station.

NASA reports that the station’s crew, three Russians and three Americans, are not in any danger; however, it is in the best interests of the crew to restore systems to nominal condition as soon as possible.

The eight-hour spacewalk is reportedly the longest ISS-based spacewalk, and the sixth longest in the history of human spaceflight.

SAHTECH, SEMI, and Semiconductor Industry to promote “SEMI Safety Guideline” in Taiwan

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

“Localization of ‘SEMI Safety Guideline'”, executed by Safety and Health Technology Center of Taiwan (SAHTECH) and supervised by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), was announced today in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

This localization included several fields on health and safety of semiconductor manufacturing, certification testing on electrical devices, evaluations on fire or natural diseases, and environmental issues on semiconductor manufacturing devices, etc.. Companies and manufacturers from the semiconductor industry also paid more attentions on this guideline because issues on carbon-savings, earthquakes, fire diseases, and environment-efficiencies were included into this guideline.

This [safety] guideline was originally promoted by SEMI since 1975 and was set up according to industry infrastructures in Europe, America, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Currently, its standards from the S1 to S25 was completely ruled by several world-class executives in semiconductor industry, and the S26 standard for FPD industry, proposed in Taiwan, was also in several arrangements with the other countries.
The semiconductor industry is a high-value industry in every country. If a fabrication plant (fab) was vandalized with fire or earthquake, how will a company decrease its lossless after a disease? As of some examples from the other countries, several companies didn’t pay more attentions on devices’ safety and finally got a damn trouble on counting lossless after a disease. By the way, voltages on electric using will take effect on energy especially the wasting of CO2. We [the semiconductor industry in Taiwan] hope this announcement will drive on global safety standards.
Generally, the designs of a fab will take effect on possibilities when a disease take place in, and its scale will chain much wasting on manufacturing devices and materials. For example, when using fluorine in a fab, a company would consider using a gas tank car rather than a steel bottle. But due to environment and carbon-saving issues, some evaluations should be tested in a fab.

On the other side of the incoming trade show of 2008 SecuTech Expo, scheduled after 2 weeks at Taipei World Trade Center, not only main fields on security devices, information security, and fire & disease preventions, the digital monitoring will be a hot topic in security industry. For applications on fire & disease preventions, because its issues contained industrial applications and ESH (Environmental, Safety & Health) managements, if a company want to decrease the ratio of fire disease or earthquake, companies from safety and related industries should pay more attentions on disease preventions.

Pakistani parliament passes bill for transgender rights

Friday, May 11, 2018

On Tuesday, Pakistan’s parliament passed a bill at Islamabad’s National Assembly which granted transgender people various civil rights. The bill, “Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act”, which was presented by Pakistan Peoples Party’s lawmaker Naveed Qamar, was approved by the senate in March, and now awaits signature of the president Mamnoon Hussain.

The bill ensures people have the right to identify themselves as male, female or as “third gender”, also known as khawaja sira in Pakistan. This identity choice is to be reflected in the National Database and Registration Authority, as well as other official documents like passports and driving licence.

Per the bill, transgender people can now cast votes, run for election, have the right to assemble, and can obtain loans for business startups. They are also eligible to inherit property per their identified gender. Transgender people are to be no longer discriminated at school, working place, for medical services, public transportation facilities, by their employers, or at private business. Separate confinement areas, jails and prisons are to be established for transgenders. Anyone found guilty of forcing transgenders to beg is to face a six-month prison term as well as 50 thousand rupees fine.

The legislation was sent to and later approved by the Council of Islamic Ideology, a government advisory body. Lahore-based activist Mehlab Jameel, who was involved in writing the bill, said the Council of Islamic Ideology “appreciated that the bill included directions on inheritance in accordance with Shari’a” law.

Last year, transgenders were included for the census count for the first time. Mehlab Jameel said, “the definition of ‘transgender’ […] was basically based on genitals” in the initial draft of the bill, written last year.

Speaking to National Public Radio, Jameel said, “This kind of development is not only unprecedented in Pakistani history, but it’s one of the most progressive laws in the whole world.” Human Rights Watch has reported at least four deaths of transgenders in the country since the beginning of 2018, and at least 57 transgenders were killed in Pakistan since 2015. Pakistan’s —reportedly— first transgender news anchor and activist Marvia Malik told Images the transgenders “are forced to dance and beg because they have no other means to make ends meet.” “My trans friends who have masters degrees don’t have jobs which is why they end up on streets or become sex workers”, Malik added.

The draft for the policy to implement this bill is not yet prepared. From the date the bill was approved, President Hussain has ten days to sign the bill or reject it.

First Time Car Buying: A Useful Guide For An Easy Car Shopping Experience

The world in the COVID-19 era has taught us to be self-dependent. The ownership of a car in 2021 means safety, convenience, and independence. Car buying is one of the biggest steps while re-entering into the world post Novel Coronavirus. And, buying a car for the first time may seem exciting and overwhelming at the same time. You need to choose the make and model and deal with auto financing as well. However, with the right buying guide, finding the right first car becomes fun and easy.

Do not worry about buying an automobile on your own. The following points will help you make wise decisions. Keep them in mind when you decide to buy your first car.

1. Establish the Budget

Understand your financial situation before researching a car. Ask yourself questions such as: Do you have enough income to make regular payments? Can you pay an upfront amount as a down payment? What is the amount of auto loan that you need? Factor in your income, expenses, and savings. And, understand if you can use the remainder towards payments. You can take the help of online auto loan calculators that will help you to establish your budget. Therefore, make a wise decision and do not overspend on a car.

2. Work on Your Credit Score

The credit score is the primary factor that decides the type of auto loan that you receive. Start by obtaining your credit report and make sure it is accurate. Many first-time car buyers may be new to the world of credit and may not have received a chance to establish their credit score. For first-time car buyers with zero credit history or no credit score, make sure to get a co-signer. A co-signer with a stellar credit score improves your chances of qualifying for the auto loan.

3. Opt for A Used Car

A new car is usually more expensive and attracts a high-interest rate as compared to a used car. If you are a student wishing to commute to your college, you can opt for a used car. Automobiles that are less than five years old have similar features as new cars but are available at a lower cost than new cars. Opt for certified pre-owned cars. You may even get a pre-approved auto loan when you consider purchasing a used car. Choose vehicles that contain warranties and stay away from lemons.

A first car is the most memorable purchase for any individual. Make sure you choose the right vehicle because it will be with you for a long time. You will experience several new things together including road trips and commuting to your first job. So, do not forget to negotiate your way into obtaining the right deal when you purchase your car for the first time.
